Although the zoo employees certainly did not intend for the lions to discover the camera so quickly, the footage we have because of it makes their discovery a true win for us all. In the video, we get the chance to see these curious lions inspect the camera. In fact, they carry the peculiar object all around — and make sure to lick it a lot, of course! When Lions in the Oregon Zoo Spot a Hidden Camera, Their Curiosity Gets the Best of Them
“These behaviors are things that our caregivers see every day,” Kelly Gomez, curator of the zoo’s Africa area, says, “but never from quite this perspective.”
Oregon Zoo is part of the Species Survival Plan for African lions. This means they’re helping to ensure the population of African lions is able to thrive for a very long time. With populations dwindling to fewer than 25,000 wild lions, this is oh-so important.
Videos like this don’t just raise awareness of the fact that these lions need our help — they also spread some much needed joy!
“That last shot in the mouth, woooow love how majestic these animals are!” one person shares in the comment section, with another adding, “Kitties are curious no matter what size they are.”
