London Zoo’s Free-Roaming Spider Exhibit Is Immersion Therapy At Its Finest

The London Zoo has an immersion room where guests can walk around with spiders in their natural environment. There is a clear warning on the door. However, If you have an aversion to spiders, this exhibit is not for you.

Caretakers assure patrons that all the spiders in the exhibit are docile and harmless. Arachnophobia is real, even when we know we’re safe. You can view a longer video on YouTube, but it might be triggering for some people. The video explains more detail about the orb weavers in the free-roaming area.

The London Zoo can also help patrons wishing to overcome their fear of spiders. They sponsor an arachnophobia-curing Friendly Spider Program that includes education and working with a zookeeper and a hypnotherapist. With the orb spinners in the free-roaming exhibit, they work to help people overcome fears.

The free-roaming spider exhibit at the London Zoo is part of their Tiny Giants family. This group of exhibits focuses on the planet’s smallest superheroes, from tiny leafcutter ants, spiders, and beetles to the underwater corals and marine life that keep our world’s ecosystems working.

Learn about the tiny animals and their environment as you view the exhibits. Some of the exhibits give patrons a bug’s eye view, complete with the kaleidoscope vision of a jumping spider. See the Giant African land snail, which can weigh a kilogram (about 2.2 pounds) and is highly invasive. Also, note the sustainability features incorporated into exhibits. The London Zoo has tried to make a comprehensive, totally immersive, and environmentally friendly experience for guests.
