When Maggie, the Grzegorczyk family’s mini golden doodle, vanished from their backyard in September 2016, they searched high and low, scouring the surrounding neighborhoods.

But, despite their best efforts, she was nowhere to be found. Fall dragged into winter, and “with our Michigan winters, we thought she was gone for good,”said Jillian Grzegorczyk. Then, in April 2018, a whole 19 months later, they got a call from Saginaw County Animal Care and Control…

A Good Samaritan had discovered Maggie and lured her into their car with cheeseburgers. She was taken to the shelter where she was scanned for a microchip. That’s when they discovered Maggie’s true identity and her family!

The Grzegorczyks were ecstatic that their beloved pooch had finally been found and immediately headed over to pick her up. How Maggie survived not just one, but two winters in Michigan is anyone’s guess; maybe she’d taken refuge with another family, or found warmth by curling up with other homeless dogs. Either way, they figured she had to be traumatized.

Those fears were sadly confirmed when they arrived at the shelter and staff members led her out into the waiting room. She was skittish and scared, spending most of the first minute hiding behind her rescuer. Who were these strange people calling to her?
Finally, the animal control officer gathered her into her lap and scooted toward Jillian. It only took a few sniffs before the frightened pup’s entire demeanor changed.

I was in disbelief it was really her but she recognized us after she got close to us and smelled us … Now it’s like she never left. It’s so good to have her home and see how happy she makes my six children.

Dogs’ sense of smell, just like our own, is linked to their memory, so Maggie’s initial hesitation makes sense. Naturally, her feelings turned to pure joy when she got a whiff of her humans, her tail whirling as she crawled into Jillian’s lap!
This is just proof that microchips save lives.
