Man Comes Face-To-Face With Mother Bear In His Garage… Here’s How He Got Through Unscathed!

Image shows a mother black bear laying near a tree with a cub playing nearby.

People are installing security cameras on and in their homes, and we are blessed with amazing footage. Alex Gold posted this clip in September, filmed by a camera inside his garage and then switched to an exterior camera. The footage depicts a bear encounter in British Columbia, Canada.

Alex, who is not a professional bear wrangler, handles this encounter perfectly. He stepped back slowly, talking to the animal in a calm tone. When the bear advanced, he clapped loudly to startle it. When that still didn’t work, he calmly went to the driver’s side of his vehicle. Sitting in the car, Alex closed the rear hatch. As the hatch is closing, a tiny cub appears on camera. Alex honked the horn, which seemed to get the mother and cub moving away.

According to National Parks Canada, Alex did everything correctly. Not all bear encounters go smoothly, but knowing how to react helps. In British Columbia, bears are fairly common, although most of the time, they are encountered while humans are hiking or camping. However, as we continue encroaching on their forests, more bears seek food in residential areas.

Many organizations, including the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, thHumane Society, and the National Park Service, publish helpful guides for bear encounters. Alex Gold is an outdoorsy guy who was aware of the correct response. He probably didn’t expect to need that knowledge in his garage, but we’re glad he knew!

If you are planning a trip for hiking or camping or live in a residential area near forests, please review the available information and stay safe around bears.

Please share if you enjoyed this incredible feat of bravery and Alex’s quick thinking.
