If it weren’t for his loyal dog, Tyler Revel might not be alive today.

The Wichita, Kansas man fell asleep on the couch while watching a football game on a Sunday when suddenly, his dog, Monroe, started nudging him and whining. He tried to shoo her away, but the dog could not be deterred. Finally, he became alert enough to realize why Monroe was being so persistent… his room was filled with smoke!
So much smoke had already filled Tyler’s entire house, in fact, that he could barely breathe. Still, he managed to grab Monroe and get outside just as the fire took hold. The blaze wound end destroying the whole house and all of his belongings.
“She [Monroe] didn’t even hesitate,” he recalled. “She knew something was wrong and she had to get me out of there. And that’s what she did.”
Sadly, Tyler’s cat, Boo, didn’t make it out in time, so he is more grateful than ever for Monroe’s heroism that night.
“She’s my best friend, man,” he said of the 6-year-old Monroe. “She’s a good dog. She’s my hero right now. And I really, I’m really proud of her.”
Tyler now realizes they got out “in the nick of time.” He feels incredibly lucky to be alive, and he credits it all to Monroe. Now, faced with replacing all of his physical belongings, he recognizes that the most important things in life can not be bought.
“I think we take a lot for granted, you know,” he said. “All that stuff in there isn’t what matters. It can always be replaced. She can’t. I can’t. I’m just… it is a very humbling experience.”
Tyler’s sister, Kimberly Revel, has set up an online fundraiser to help him recover from the fire.
“My brother has a huge heart and always gives to others when he can,” she wrote. “In the spirit of giving, especially around the holidays, I’m asking if you would feel called to give a donation of any amount to help my brother rebuild his life in a time of need.”
Monroe is the ultimate good girl! This sweet pup knew there was danger present and refused to give up on saving her human. We wish them both the best as they rebuild their lives after the fire.
