Did you know that Mars can be visible from Earth without the use of a telescope? For that to be possible, the right conditions have to be in place. Lucky for us, 2025 is going to give us the best opportunities we have had since 2022. Usually, when we can see this far-off planet, it’s rather faint. That was the case last year.

This year, however, Earth’s orbit is finally nearing Mars, which moves at a slower pace. As we pass by Mars, we’re doing so between it and the Sun. This makes Mars much closer and brighter than normal. Want to catch a glimpse yourself? Check out the stunning video below!
@abc7newsbayarea A brightly lit Mars could be seen passing behind a full moon during a rare lunar occultation on Monday. Mars is More Visible This Year, and This Stunning Video Perfectly Proves It!
There’s a lot to love about this video. For starters, there’s the beauty of the Wolf Moon. This full Moon takes place every January, making it the first one of the year. It earned this nickname because it’s when wolves are particularly active. And, you guessed it, howling at the Moon!
You know how it seems as though the Moon is moving in front of Mars? There’s actually a term for this: lunar occultation. It’s considered pretty rare, making this moment all the more special!
We can most easily see Mars when it’s in opposition to Earth. The peak took place on January 16, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to see a moment like this in person! In fact, it’s being said that Mars will be visible near a bright star called Pollux from January 20-26. How exciting!
