Mary Lou Retton Celebrates Huge Family Milestone A Year After Nearly Losing Her Life

Mary Lou Retton has a grandson, and the brand-new baby is a perfect 10. Mary Lou’s daughter, Shayla Schrephfer, welcomed son Sullivan Wyatt Schrepfer on February 1. Shayla shared a darling Instagram video with her baby wrapped in a fluffy brown blanket as she swayed him over a pink outfit and blue outfit and text that reads, “Boy or Girl?” The next thing we see is sweet Sully dressed and ready to cuddle.

A follower wrote, “Congratulations!! So happy for you!! Welcome to the world, Sullivan!”

Another shared, “Can’t wait to hear the story of what went down! Congratulations! Very handsome boy indeed!!!”

Shayla announced her pregnancy on Instagram in August 2024, just after he sister, Skyla Brae, welcomed a daughter, Mary Lou’s first grandchild.

During Skyla’s pregnancy, Mary Lou shared her excitement with People. She said, “I’m going to be a LouLou,” she declared. “I don’t want to be a Mimi, a Gigi, or a Nana. A LouLou!”

Mary Lou added, “I’m just going to be spoiling the heck out of them,” she said. “Which I did not do to my kids! So I’ll spoil them, and when they come over I’ll just play with them, hide and seek, all of it. It’s going to be LouLou’s time!”

Mary Lou Retton Came Back From A Terrifying Health Scare

In October 2023, the Olympic gold medalist nearly died from a dangerous battle with pneumonia. She told People in July 2024 that her girls prepared to say goodbye to Mary Lou as she lay intubated in the intensive care unit.

“They prayed over me, and McKenna said, ‘Mommy, it’s OK, you can go.’ I didn’t have much of a relationship with my mother, but I can’t imagine what that was like, to watch their mom on her deathbed,” she said.

But now, Mary Lou is well and looking forward to all that LouLou time.
