Mysterious Spiral of Light Puzzles Countless People Across Europe

This odd, spiraling light remained visible in the sky for several minutes. While some were convinced it was a UFO, others landed on a more mundane conclusion: an aircraft. Ultimately, however, neither of the answers are correct. That said, we can officially say was caused all of this commotion… exhaust from a rocket.

Earlier that same day, SpaceX held a launch for the United States government. So, when the rocket (called Falcon 9) returned to Earth, it released fuel to shed some of its weight. Its frozen exhaust plume, in turn, created this odd spiral of light.

“The rocket’s frozen exhaust plume appears to be spinning in the atmosphere and reflecting the sunlight, causing it to appear as a spiral in the sky,” someone from the Met Office, the United Kingdom’s national weather and climate service, explains.

Sure, it’s no UFO sighting. But it’s still pretty darn cool!
