Dr. Amber Samuel, Marisa’s maternal-fetal medicine specialist, told KABC that the woman had experienced an amniotic fluid embolism. This means that amniotic fluid entered her bloodstream, and her body had a near-fatal allergic reaction to it. Throughout a period of 45 minutes, the mom flatlined several times.
For Marisa’s husband, Dylan, this went from being one of the best days of his life to one of the worst. He approved a hysterectomy for his wife, hoping that the medical team could save her. Thankfully, they did! Even though this mom had been clinically dead, she still managed to pull through and wake up.
While her babies were in the NICU, Marisa had some serious recovering to do, including re-learning how to walk. It was a very emotional moment when the mom and her family were finally able to go home!
Since Marisa can’t recall the details of giving birth, she’s been relying on snapshots taken by her loved ones.
“My family took lots of photos and videos of me when I was in the hospital, which helped a lot to be able to kind of have reality hit,” she said.
Even though she can’t remember everything that happened, she’s extremely grateful to have survived. This is something she thinks about especially when caring for her triplets becomes overwhelming.
“I try to remind myself in those hard moments I’m like, ‘I almost missed all of it,’ so it kind of puts it in perspective,” she told KABC.
