If you’ve got a picky eater at home, you might be interested in this mom’s creative method of getting her kid to try new foods! Renee Reina shared her ingenious idea on social media, and the internet is loving it. What’s clever about her strategy is that it gives her son the freedom of choice while still encouraging him to snack outside the box! She explained her approach in a sweet video.

“I brought my 5-year-old to the grocery store so he could pick out one fruit, one vegetable, and one packaged item that he’s never tried before,” Renee wrote. “He was so excited and I’m hoping this will help increase the number of foods he eats.”

This is such an excellent way to get a young kid to want to try new foods! Even though the boy has to pick out items he’s never eaten before, he still gets to decide what they are. That turns the whole experience into something way more positive!

At the end of the video, Renee showcased the new foods her kid chose to try for the first time. In the fruit category, he picked a beautiful slice of papaya. He selected some type of root for his vegetable. Then, for the packaged item, he went for a container of pecans.

Other parents have tried this unique method with great results!

Although it doesn’t look like the mother posted her son’s reaction to sampling these snacks, some commenters wrote that they’d been doing similar activities with their own kids quite successfully!

“I do this with my nephew,” wrote one user. “Any fruit or vegetable you want. Such a ‘treat.’ I’m the cool aunt.”

“I did this when my kids were little,” added another. “We also used to pick a place on the globe and try to make a dish from that country — so fun to try new foods and recipes.”

Other commenters were excited to try this method on their kids — and themselves!

“You know what I might also do this for myself next time I go, this sounds fun,” one person said.

What a great way to turn trying new foods into a fun game kids (and maybe some adults) will love!
