Being a toddler parent during the “learning to talk” phase can be fun. They know some words well and will repeat them ad nauseum. Other words are not yet in their vocabulary. Lacking words, they will try to use the words they know to convey their meaning. This can lead to hilarious results. This toddler wants to hear the monkey song, and his parents have no clue what the song is.

It took them some time to figure out what song their toddler wanted to hear. Then, one day, their toddler was all smiles when the song came on. It turns out the monkey song is “Down with the Sickness” by Disturbed.

Singer/songwriter David Draiman makes an unusual “ooh-wah-ah-ah-ah” sound during the song. It does sound like a monkey, so the toddler’s reference makes sense, even though the song isn’t about monkeys.

The lyrics have been questioned because they deal with a touchy subject: child abuse. In an interview with the Phoenix New Times, Draiman said, “I’m really talking about the conflict between the mother culture of society, who’s beating down the child yearning for independence and individuality, and the submission of the child.”

Heavy metal songs have a message, and this one is no different. As he listens, the toddler bobs his head, in traditional head-banger style. These parents will have a metal-loving teen on their hands in a few years. If they want something with a similar sound and more “fun” lyrics, they could try “We Come From Monkeys” by Emerald Rose. The monkey sounds don’t sound out until the final chorus, though.

There are worse things in life than raising a music-loving toddler. Kudos to this kid for being persistent.
