Moo Deng, the baby hippo, has two half-sisters, Moo Tun and Moo Wan. The three are all named after pork dishes. Moo Deng is a Thai BBQ pork and rice dish, Moo Tun is stewed pork, and Moo Wan is sweet pork. Moo Deng is about two months old and has grown much since birth. We tend to think hippos are BIG, but a newborn baby pygmy hippo fits in the palm of an adult hand.
Since Moo Deng’s online popularity has soared, visits to the zoo have almost doubled. The zoo has had to limit visitors around the pygmy hippo enclosure to keep the animals safe from poorly behaving guests. The baby is not eating solid food yet, but patrons sometimes toss shrimp and other food into the pen.
If you want a hippopotamus for Christmas, you must stand in line and help with conservation efforts. As a smaller cousin to the full-sized version, they aren’t as intimidating. Pygmy hippos are unquestionably adorable and endangered. There are only 2,000 to 3,000 living in the wild. Moo Deng’s popularity is helping to bring awareness to all her new fans.
