The Jackson Hole, Wyoming, skiers recently lost a downhill race against an unlikely competitor. While gliding down the slope, shouts of “Watch out!” and “Go faster!” rang out as skiers shouted warnings. One person managed some pretty good footage, probably using a GoPro or similar camera. What he saw racing down the slopes with fellow skiers and snowboarders was a full-grown moose in Jackson Hole!

The gently sloping terrain on this portion of the course seemed perfect for the moose to cut loose. It ran full tilt and had no trouble speeding past skiers. The sure-footed moose seemed fairly comfortable among the humans. The Jackson Hole ski resort cuts through the moose’s backyard, so it was “at home.” Slowing to a canter under the chair lift, the moose accelerated again on a slightly steeper part of the hill.
Comments under the video were a mixture, including, “The last thing a beginner skier wants to hear is ‘Go faster,'” Other commenters thought that the moose might feel like it is being chased. Still, others thought the moose was having fun with the Jackson Hole skiers. Any of the above might be true. We’re not moose whisperers, so we can’t say for sure, but the humans do not seem to bother the moose.
We aren’t sure if this is a male or female moose. While only male moose grow antlers, they typically shed them in December or January and grow new ones in the spring. As the “race” competitors approach the bottom of the slope, the moose calmly struts off the side of the course like a champion. No humans were harmed in the making of this video. The moose won the race, after all!
