The winter months can be tough for seniors. In addition to the heightened dangers of slip-and-fall accidents, it can be hard for them to clear their sidewalks and driveways after an intense snowfall. Thankfully, there are those kind souls who are willing to step up and lend a hand.

Chicago native Jahmal Cole is such person. However, even he was blown away after his call for a few volunteers was met with incredible responses.
It started when Jahmal, who runs the non-profit community group “My Block, My Hood, My City,” sent out this tweet:
Chicago, I need (10) volunteers to help me shovel for seniors tomorrow. I’m getting too many emails from elderly folks that need help. Meet me at the 79th St. Red Line stop at 10:00 am tomorrow. I got hoodies, hats and lunch for anybody that comes through. #formyblock pic.twitter.com/8Gb86cK3IH

And what started out as one man wanting to do something good for the elderly in his community transformed into 100 people showing up to help. They helped shovel the yards of 50 families, mostly belonging to senior citizens.

It was especially touching to see such a diverse response from people all over Chicago and beyond. As Jahmal’s tweet went viral, Americans from across the country began to reach out with donations for My Block, My Hood, My City.

Another plus? Hoodies for everyone!

Jahmal couldn’t contain his gratitude, and he took to Twitter to thank so many people for helping out.
Shout out to all the volunteers and neighbors who came out last weekend. We did some real good shoveling for seniors. Check out the highlights and hoodie up at https://t.co/ncmBA3wUvc 📷by @teddywaffles pic.twitter.com/2huhzpXpfo
