Kayla flips through a neatly typed, pages-long listing of dates, times, and what they did. The document recreates 60 years of love. Like “The Notebook,” her grandpa’s memories tell the story of their lives together.
In Nicholas Sparks’s book, an elderly man visits his wife in a memory care center. She doesn’t remember him, but he reads to her daily from her diary. The love story was made into a movie in 2004 starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. As the narrator, James Garner, reads the diary, the young actors “relive” the love story. The story will make you laugh and weep with joy and sadness.
Kayla found herself holding a similar missive detailing the love between her Grandma and Grandpa. Each entry tells a detail of their lives. On May 26, 1970, they went grocery shopping and made spaghetti for dinner. On September 29, 1970, they had pork chops for dinner and then went bowling.
Exploring Grandpa’s Memory
The journal’s handwritten title is “The Beginning of a Wonderful Relationship.” The first entry is on December 5, 1969. The note next to that date says, “We met at the Collegiate Club dance at the Cheshire Inn.” On December 7, 1969, the two went to see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid at the movies. Each entry tells a snippet of how the relationship between Jim and Kay grew.
On June 13, 1970, the entry reads, “Jim picked up Kay after work and went to the ‘Den of Times’ for drinks. There, Jim proposed to Kay…” The entry details the playful banter that made the entire proposal, adding an extra level of realism.
Kayla’s Grandpa may not have known it when he began documenting the story of Jim and Kay, but he was writing the most remarkable love story of all time. The minute details in his little snippets tell the story better than ever.
