Mysterious Black Ring Appears Over Virginia & Officials Are Stumped

When something unusual is spotted in the sky, there is usually a clear explanation — but not always. That is certainly the case for what Virginia residents saw in the sky just after 11 a.m. on Tuesday. More specifically, it took place in the sky over the Williamsburg area. According to multiple witnesses, a mysterious black ring appeared in the sky. As a result, there are quite a few photos and videos of it.

Still, even the photographic evidence hasn’t brought about any confirmed explanation for what caused this black ring. It simply appeared one minute and then vanished entirely just minutes later. That being said, based on similar situations, there are some guesses to be made about the situation.

“I still think it’s something alien…” Virginia resident Renee Fisher writes, sharing some photos they managed to capture, “but Google says smoke ring, cloud formation, ring of birds… everything but alien space portal.”

In the past, similar black rings were caused by fires and explosions. Still, according to the James City Country Fire Department, there were no reported incidents at that time that would explain this mystery ring.

According to Ricky Matthews, a meteorologist, the cause of this mystery may be pyrotechnics or something similar. Another meteorologist, Steve Fundaro, says an industrial process may be the cause. Get a closer look at the ring in the video below.

Odds are, we will never get confirmation on what caused this mysterious black ring. Though, it seems most people won’t mind. After all, they’re having too much fun contemplating the endless possibilities (including the silliest ones)!

“It’s a portal opening up,” one person jokes, with another adding, “They forgot to turn on the invisibility cloaking device.”
