Neighbors Band Together In The Wake Of Hurricane Helene To Help Each Other To Safety

A group of people wearing backpacks walks along a road with debris and nearby a massively destroyed part of the road that leads to water

Last week, Hurricane Helene left behind 500 miles’ worth of destruction that spans from Florida all the way up to the Southern Appalachians. Even areas that are normally not affected by hurricanes (at least not to this degree) have experienced devastation unlike anything they’ve seen before. In the wake of this storm, people are finding it more important than ever to find those who are willing and able to help.

This is especially vital for those who are still looking to escape cities and smaller towns that are no longer safe. Doing so, however, can be nearly impossible. With entire roads broken apart, evacuating to safe locations requires lots of planning and walking. Check out the video below to get a glimpse of what escaping is like in this area.

@onthiscloud Chimney Rock day 3. We packed whatever we could carry on our backs and started our journey to the fire department. Multiple roads had collapsed so we were climbing up the mountain and through properties looking for a detour. Thank god for our neighbors who had already taken the trip quite a few times Taking families with small children. #westernnorthcarolina #chimneyrock #hurricanehelene #asheville #lakelure #northcarolina #fyp ♬ original sound – OnThisCloud

As many others have pointed out, these areas look like something out of a movie or video game. Thankfully, the woman recording in the video above, and her family, were not alone in their journey.

“We packed whatever we could carry on our backs and started our journey to the fire department,” the caption reads. “Multiple roads had collapsed so we were climbing up the mountain and through properties looking for a detour. Thank god for our neighbors who had already taken the trip quite a few times Taking families with small children.”

Family Escaping North Carolina Town Destroyed by Hurricane Helene Gets Support From Kind Neighbors

@onthiscloud Finally reached our first transport destination. Fire fighters had waters for us. Loaded us up and dropped us to the fire station. We were really the only group there. Which made me wonder if people had already evacuated or if many people were still stuck or worse. #northcarolina #westernnorthcarolina #chimneyrock #hurricanehelene #asheville #lakelure ♬ original sound – OnThisCloud

Based on other videos from this account, the journey was incredibly long. Thankfully, there were stops along the way at fire stations. Here, they finally had access to “transport vehicles, water, food, coffee, etc.,” all things they were “extremely grateful” to be given. By Sunday, the U.S. Army was able to transport this family out.

There are no words to describe the devastation left behind by hurricane Helene, making moments of selfless acts all the more vital. The InspireMore team sends our sincere well wishes for those affected by the devastating aftermath of this storm.
