Snow can be oh-so beautiful… but it can also greatly disrupt our day-to-day lives. This is especially true of lake effect snow. According to the National Weather Service, this type of snow happens when cold air passes over relatively warm waters, often the Great Lakes. In turn, clouds produce an overwhelming amount of snow. More specifically, two to three inches per hour or more!

So, when lake effect snow made its way across New York, locals knew what to expect. This includes the Barneveld Volunteer Fire Department. But as snow continued to pile up on their roof, even these first responders were a bit surprised by the structural damage it was causing. This very damage, soon enough, led to the fire station’s roof caving in entirely. Footage of the moment it collapsed can be found below.

As harrowing as this experience was for those involved, thankfully, not a single person got hurt. Because they noticed the structural issue soon enough, the correct actions were taken to keep everyone safe.

“While some of our crews were removing snow from the roof other members started coming up with a plan to start shoring up the structure,” station leaders share in a statement. “After a short time it was determined that the building had become too unstable, and our members were removed from the area and the building collapsed a short time later.”

This is far from the only building to have collapsed due to the snow. Those at that very fire department have been called to help others in similar situations. So, despite the fact the Barneveld Firehouse will need to be partially rebuilt, they’re still more than ready to help their community.

“Please be rest assured that the members of the Barneveld Vol. Fire Department are ready to respond just like we always have since 1838,” their official statement continues.
