New York Waterfall Develops Stunning Bright Blue Icicles

View from behind of a man and woman walking in the snow toward a waterfall in the distance. The water at the falls is frozen. Many of the icicles are a vivid blue color.

NYC has a lot to offer visitors, of course. But the beauty found in Upstate New York should not be underestimated. For example, there’s a gorgeous place called Wolcott Falls Park. Here, folks are welcome to have a picnic, go on a hike, or simply hide away in nature for a bit. Plus, there’s a 50-foot waterfall to admire!

A woman named Ana expected to be blown away by Wolcott Falls but not for this unexpected reason. Because it was so cold, most of the usually flowing water was frozen. But that isn’t what surprised Ana. What did surprise her, however, were the many bright blue icicles she found! See them for yourself in the stunning video below.

“Upstate New York is so underrated,” someone points out in reply to Ana’s video, with another adding, “I live about 15 minutes from Wolcott. These are beautiful and I didn’t know they were there. I’m gonna have to check it out.”

While these vivid blue icicles are stunning, many are asking, “What the heck is making them look like that?” But the answer, it turns out, is not so straightforward…

Residents of New York and Beyond Speculate On the Cause of these Beautiful Blue Icicles

There are a number of theories about these shockingly blue icicles. Some say ice this blue forms when high pressure forces air bubbles out. Others believe some mineral is contributing to this change. But the most likely theory, it seems, is that someone dyed the icicles. Thankfully, even if that is the case, it seems that it’s not harmful to the environment.

“I’ve talked with several well respected village officials who have suggested to me this is a fun prank — one that has gone on for a few years now,” a man named John Kucko shares in a post. “One person even shared an image with me from several years ago when blue, orange and green colors were vibrant on the ice.”

John goes on to say, “I’m told environmental experts have, in the past, examined this to make sure no harmful fluids were used. I WISH we’d get blue ice that natural.”

Natural or not, there’s no doubt these blue icicles have and continue to bring joy to people’s lives!
