Opossum Enters Rehab After Scarfing Down An Entire Costco Cake

Image shows a Virginia opossum recovering after eating an entire Costco cake.

Almost everyone loves cake. When a Virginia opossum found an unattended Costco cake on Kim Doggett’s deck, she helped herself. Unable to resist the chocolate tuxedo cake, the opossum gorged herself. The family discovered the animal curled in a ball on their patio sofa, surrounded by little chocolate opossum footprints.

After attempting and failing to shoo the opossum away, Kim realized that chocolate might be toxic. She notified the American Humane Society, which took the overindulgent critter for evaluation. Unsure of the toxicity, the facility treated the animal for poison as a safeguard.

The cake was probably not deadly; however, during evaluation, they discovered that the little opossum had high lead levels in her system. Since that can be fatal if not treated, she is currently a patient at the Nebraska Wildlife Rehab. The shy girl is now an internet sensation after a Facebook post. She has a new nickname, “The Cake Bandit.”

Dozens of news outlets reported on the Cake Bandit, increasing her fame. When she completes her rehab, the little girl will return to the wild, where she will undoubtedly find more porch snacks. They are estimating that treatment for her lead levels will take about six weeks. During that time, she’ll be on a regulated diet with no cake on the menu. In a recent update from Nebraska Wildlife Rehab, she was complaining about her dietary restrictions.

This lovely little opossum will be continuing treatment to remove lead from her system. They vow not to let her eat cake and to teach her better dietary habits. It is doubtful that her sweet tooth will disappear that easily. However, we do wish her luck.

Please share if you think opossums are adorably cute.
