Alright, I’ll admit it. I’ve never seen Dirty Dancing. Nor have I listened to the soundtrack, which features a song (“She’s Like the Wind”) performed by Patrick Swayze. That being said, everyone knows he can dance, but what I didn’t know– until today– was that Patrick Swayze could sing. And man could he sing!

This video, of Patrick Swayze covering “Love Hurts” with Gatlin Brother, Larry, is chilling! The duet is simple and soulful. Swayze’s soft voice, combines perfectly with Gatlin’s country twang. Accompanied by only one fiddle and one acoustic guitar, their rendition gives the classic, mournful lyrics new life.
“Some fools dream of happiness,
blissfullness, togetherness.
Some fools fool themselves I guess,
but they’re not fooling me.”
“Love Hurts” was originally written and composed by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant and originally recorded by The Everly Brothers in 1961. But Roy Orbison was the first to make “Love Hurts” a hit.
Swayze and Gatlin performed the song in Orbison’s honor at a tribute concert benefitting the homeless in 1990. And it is so beautiful! The audience totally eats up their performance, and it’s still a gift to hear today.
