Photographer Captures Stunning Moment As Dolphins Swim Through Bioluminescence

One lucky photographer managed to capture some rare footage of dolphins swimming through bioluminescence, and it’s truly mesmerizing! Josh Gravley’s video shows these majestic creatures leaping out of the water, leaving glowing trails of bright blue in their wake. It’s almost hard to believe that this phenomenon is for real! However, bioluminescence is apparently way more common in the ocean than it is on land.

According to National Geographic, bioluminescence is a chemical reaction that produces light. You’ve probably already experienced it while watching fireflies or jellyfish. Plenty of other living organisms “glow” due to this marvel of nature, such as certain types of fish and bacteria. There must have been some creatures in the water emitting light through bioluminescence where the dolphins in Josh’s video were swimming.

“Moments like these are why I’m proud to be a photographer,” read the man’s social media caption. “Capturing such beautiful animals and phenomena feels very special.”

As Josh explained to Newsweek, he’d been exploring L.A. waters, which were experiencing “exceptionally bright bioluminescence” at that time — he had no idea he’d be able to capture such stunning dolphin footage, as well. On his first boat trip, he didn’t see anything nearly as spectacular. However, it turned out that the second time was the charm as far as dolphin sightings were concerned.

“We knew there might be a chance of seeing them, but it’s exponentially harder to find dolphins at night,” the photographer said. “We had expectations but they were decidedly low.”

Josh’s amazing video has received over six million views on social media. Commenters couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw these dolphins stirring the bioluminescence in the water with their gliding motions.

“If I saw this in real life I would cry,” wrote one user.

Another added, “Wait this is MAGICAL.”

Nature is full of beautiful surprises, isn’t it?
