Handing a Polaroid camera to a 5-year-old could be folly or fate. For Madison Mealy, giving her son Dane the instant camera is fate. Dane and his sister, Nora, were outside. He popped into photographer mode so fast and naturally, it is like he was born for this. Nora became the perfect model, following every tip and direction precisely and gracefully.

Dane decided that he wanted to shoot the whole roll of film outside with his Polaroid camera. He asked his model for permission, and she agreed. As he helped her with posing, Dane showered his sister with compliments.
Working with Nora, Dane moved her around the area, trying different lighting. He calmly helped her pose just like a professional photographer. At one point, he decided to try blowing snow and asked his dad for assistance. Blake grabbed a handful of loose snow, tossing it into the air. Dane snapped the image, making it look like it was snowing. He complimented his sister several times throughout the photoshoot.
Dane was 100% invested in creating great images with his Polaroid camera. He gave very clear instructions for his model to follow. He even demonstrated how he wanted her to kick up some snow. Watching him work, you would not know he was only 5. He acted like a talented professional.
When his mom asked if he wanted one of her and Nora, he responded, “Yeah, yeah, of course, little ladies.”
The family of four lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains region of North Carolina. Madison posts family videos on Instagram and TikTok. This isn’t Dane’s first camera adventure. Blake and Madison gave the kids a digital camera, which they loved.
