Nobody knows you better than your dog, so it stands to reason that your four-legged friend should be considered a valid witness at your wedding! One couple decided to take advantage of the Colorado law that would allow their precious pooches to sign their marriage license. In a sweet video on social media, bride Marlene Palomar posted some beautiful footage of the special moment. She looked so excited to be sharing the occasion with her adorable pups!

Obviously, there’s one issue with having your dogs as witnesses at your wedding: they can’t hold a pen to sign the paperwork. Thankfully, paw prints are also accepted! With a little assistance, two pooches added their seal of approval to Marlene and her husband’s marriage license.
At the end of the video, this bride had the biggest smile on her face as she held the paperwork up to the camera and showed off the smudgy paw prints in the bottom corner of the page. Even though her dogs probably didn’t know exactly what they had signed, we’re sure they were happy to be there on Mom and Dad’s special day!
According to a 2023 article from Newsweek, it’s Colorado’s “self-solemnizing marriage law” that allows couples to choose their dogs as witnesses at their weddings. Under this law, witnesses are not actually required in order for a union to be valid.

Some commenters on Marlene’s post were thrilled to learn that Colorado allows dogs to be witnesses at their owners’ weddings. A few joked about getting married again just to have their pup sign their marriage license!

Another said, “Now I gotta get divorced to remarry.”
While this might be a bit extreme, we totally get it. Who wouldn’t want their dog’s signature on their marriage license?
