Most people know the name Gene Simmons. He enjoyed a long career as the lead singer for the hard rock band Kiss. Although the band’s most popular era was the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s, they are still well-known in the industry. Their trademark look was the stage makeup each member wore during performances. The white face paint with black accents made them stand out. Gene Simmons’ model was his daughter, Sophie Tweed Simmons, when he showed fans how he creates his iconic look.

The makeup session was an interview for Cosmopolitan in 2014 hosted by Gene Simmons’ daughter. The rockstar began by pointing out the unique brand of face paint he uses, Stein’s Clown White. Gene patiently discussed the importance of a thick, smooth base layer as he slathered GOBS of white face paint onto Sophie’s face.

Gene Simmons’ daughter had trouble not smiling during the makeup session. Her dad made jokes and drew a sad little clown face as he worked to apply the base coat. He was very good about explaining each step of the process, including how to correct little slip-ups.

Gene Simmons added black to his daughter’s face, explaining that you can use any eyeliner pencil. He starts by adding a series of dots along the nose to outline the large, black design. The base “sketch” is just an outline; he explains that you can refine it later. Thinking of everything, he includes some blending tips. Once the outline is complete, he removes the white inside the design using cotton swabs.
