The Ren Faire is a magical place where you can find medieval warriors, maidens, huntsmen, and Lorax. Yes, the Lorax has been making an appearance at Renaissance Festivals. If you aren’t sure what the Lorax is, he is the protector of the forest created in the imagination of Dr. Suess.

In the original story, the Lorax is awakened when Once-ler chops down a tree in the forest. Once-ler is a villain, but he’s more like a gangly teenager with very little knowledge of the world. Once-ler sets off on an adventure to find the materials to make his invention, the “Thneed.”
When he begins junking up the forest, the critters get angry. He finds what he needs in a forest of Truffula trees. When he chops the first tree down, it summons the Lorax, a “mystical creature as old as time itself.” Introducing himself as the guardian of the forest, the Lorax warns Once-ler not to take the trees. Of course, the villain doesn’t listen, which sets up the remainder of the story.
I can hear you wondering, “But what does this all have to do with a Ren Faire?” At a local Ren Faire, a posse of Lorax appeared wielding medieval weapons to do battle against Once-ler. It’s not something you see daily, and the unusual demonstration delighted festival patrons.
The comical “Battle Royale” provided a neat break from the typical Ren Faire battles. Once-ler did not stand a chance against the small but mighty Lorax. I don’t know who the actors were, but they did an outstanding job as Once-ler and guardians of the forest amidst the pirates, jousters, and medieval fighters.
