As we’ve seen from storms like Hurricane Helene, flooding can be deadly. Even with a heads-up, making a plan for these storms can be tricky. That’s what makes flash floods all the more dangerous. This is the type of flooding that folks in Valencia, Spain recently experienced. In mere minutes, the unexpected downpours became one the most powerful floods they’ve ever had.

Part of what made this flood so powerful is that it led to rivers and canals overflowing into towns and villages. As a result, much of Valencia was saturated. But hearing about the flood and seeing the aftermath are two different things. In the video below, you’ll find chilling satellite imagery that shows what this area looked like before and after the flood.
As you can see, the flooding has, quite literally, transformed Valencia. And because the people there had little to no warning of this danger, most did not have time to react. This left people in locations where flooding can quickly turn deadly, like car parks. Thankfully, however, brave heroes are coming together to rescue those in need. Some, like those in the video below, are being rescued by helicopter.

While some folks are rescued from helicopters, others are getting a helping hand from their neighbors. Despite the fact that the flood had taken over the road, he ventured outside to rescue a woman and two children who were trapped. To do so, he had to break through a glass door.
“We live next door and I saw this man taking the children out of the English school,” Aicha Banaggui, the woman who captured the moment says, “and I thought I would record him for his act of humility, because he is a hero.”
In the aftermath of this deadly flooding, these rescue efforts continue to take place — and we have brave folks like the ones in these videos to thank. When devastation occurs, it can be easy to feel hopeless. That makes us all the more grateful for the heroes who are willing and able to stand up for others!
