The conservationist took to Instagram on November 30th with pictures of the Crocodile Hunter on his 21st birthday in 1983. In them, Steve looks remarkably like Robert as he cuts into a cake.

“Today I turn 21,” Robert wrote in the caption. “I was looking through the archives a few days ago, and I found these pictures of my dad on his 21st. It can be hard to celebrate the milestones when there’s someone missing, but I will carry his memory and passion with me in this new chapter of life.”

“I am one lucky guy to be surrounded by my amazing family today,” he added. “Time to celebrate!”

“Dad is so proud of you,” his sister, Bindi Irwin, commented.

Steve Irwin tragically passed away on September 4th, 2006, after a short-tail stingray barb pierced his chest while he was filming a documentary in the Great Barrier Reef. He was only 44 years old.

Robert Irwin, along with his mother, Terri, his sister, and his brother-in-law, Chandler Powell, have honored Steve’s legacy throughout their own lives. The four of them are conservationists and run the Australia Zoo, just as Steve did. Robert is also a professional wildlife photographer.

Terri Irwin Shares “Fun” Video Of Steve On Robert’s Birthday

Terri Irwin also remembered Steve as she marked her son’s birthday. On Instagram, she posted a video of her family pretending to have a Wild West shootout before reminding her son that Steve would be proud of the man he’s become.

“Happy 21st birthday @robertirwinphotography!” she cheered in the caption. “Remembering all our fun family moments and knowing your dad would be so proud of you. I love you, and I can’t wait for the adventures to come.”
