School picture day happens every year in every public school in the United States. Almost every school picture day includes at least one noteworthy fail. The kids either look forward to the day or dread its arrival. There is seldom an “in-between” mood. On the other hand, parents dread the cost but love the memories that allow them to share their child’s adorable face across the universe. We send our kids away on school picture day in search of the perfect smile.

When Willow went to school on her first-ever picture day, Mom Jameka (Ja_me_ka) was hopeful. She wanted beautiful pictures of her daughter to share with family and friends. Willow told her Mom she smiled perfectly, demonstrating the smile and telling her Mom she said, “Cheese.”
Ah, dear, and alas. If only that were true. The image revealed the truth when the proofs returned a few weeks later. Willow did not say, “Cheese.” There was no beautiful, toothy smile. The picture was devoid of any child-like happiness. Willow looked like she was not pleased with any part of picture day, and that tears were a brief second away.
If it wasn’t for the matching shirt and hair baubles, you might not even realize the two images were the same child. If you’re a parent, you understand the tragedy of a school picture fail. It has happened to all of us, whether you have one child or a half dozen.
We think a photographer’s magic might bring out our children’s silliness or surliness. There will be at least one fail as long as there are school picture days. We will laugh, and life will go on.
Please share if Willow’s cheesy grimace made you smile.
