The city of Manhattan is astounding for a long list of reasons, but did you know it has its own celestial event? “Reverse Manhattanhenge” is a beautiful occurrence where the sun lines up with the streets of Manhattan and pours golden light into the city at sunrise.

Manhattenhenge is the original form, a version that happens at sunset during the summer solstice. Reverse Manhattenhenge, then, is the winter form, happening in the wee hours of the morning.
This year’s first Reverse Manhattanhenge occurred this week on November 29. Around 7 in the morning, the light of the sky burst into the city, in perfect alignment with the urban setting.
It was a beautiful display of nature interrupting a metropolitan space.
If you missed this week’s Reverse Manhattanhenge but want to take in the event in the future, head outside the morning of January 11, 2024, to see the sun in action again.
These celestial events don’t happen often, but they’re perfect opportunities to celebrate the beauty that’s all around us. We have a sunrise and a sunset everyday, but how often do we take the time to watch them?
Check out some beautiful clips of November 29th’s Reverse Manhattanhenge below. It’s stunning!
