Naomi Osaka was once the No. 1 women’s tennis player, but she hasn’t been on the court since September 2022. That is, until now! Last Monday, the tennis star celebrated a big win against Tamara Korpatsch at the Brisbane International. One major change in her life has been making victory so much sweeter. She’s a mom now!

In July, Osaka and her partner, musician Cordae, welcomed a baby girl into the world. According to CBS News, the athlete said that her daughter, Shai, has been altering her perspective when it comes to sports.

“Off the court I’m more aware of people and I appreciate them a lot more — even my opponents and everything,” she explained. “On the court it’s just helping me be strong and staying in the moment more.”

Obviously, returning to the competitive sport after her leave was no small feat. Even though the athlete was prepared, she was still worried about her performance.

“I was super nervous the whole time,” she recalled. “A part of me felt like Shai was watching me. I wanted to do my best for her.”

As Naomi Osaka continues on to another match next round, she’s got her eye on a slightly different prize: making her kid proud.

“While I’m playing, I’m aware of it in the sense that I want to be a good role model for my daughter,” she said. “Other than that I think I’m pretty much trying to be the same old me.”

Osaka received a massive outpouring of support on social media when she celebrated her comeback with a few photos from the Brisbane International.

“Ya did great!!” wrote one commenter. “I know there has to be nerves, but it didn’t look like it. You didn’t hold back. Your power is the same. Awesome job!!”

We’re glad to see this professional tennis player back in the game with a brand new attitude. Best of luck to Naomi Osaka as she continues to inspire women in sports!
