Just as a dog can sense when someone is unkind, most pets have a sense when people are good-hearted and have kind intentions. Perhaps that’s why a 9-year-old tabby cat who was abandoned on the streets of Montreal, Canada made his way to the doorstep of Steph and Francis.
Steph and Francis first noticed the gray tabby lingering around their apartment when they started feeding strays. He resembled their cat, Pruno, so they nicknamed him Granpruno.
They soon learned that a former neighbor recently moved out without taking her cats, choosing to release them onto the city streets instead. Local authorities had rounded up many of the cats, but there were still a few hold-outs like this one.
At first, the couple noticed the cat’s fur looked clean and that he seemed healthy. He came by every day for weeks and gobbled up the food they gave him. He was incredibly friendly, so they started to think he had a home somewhere nearby.
They contacted Chaton Orphelins Montreal, an animal rescue, but before they could capture Granpruno and take him to the shelter to check for a microchip, the cat disappeared for several weeks.
Then, one day, as they were taking out the trash, they found Granpruno sitting inside their garbage bin. Sadly, he looked like a whole different animal.
“He was skin and bones and he didn’t seem good at all,” Chatons Orphelins Montréal wrote on Facebook. “When he approached them, they immediately hugged him. Without saying anything, he let himself depart [with them].”
Steph and Francis scooped up the older kitty and brought him straight to the vet. He was diagnosed with hypothyroidism which made him regurgitate his food and caused weight loss. He was put on medication, and the couple took him home to foster him for adoption.
Once Granpruno started to feel better, his amazing personality was able to shine! He turned out to be one of the most affectionate cats the couple has ever known.
In fact, they love him so much that they decided to adopt him! It’s like he just knew he’d found the right people!
