Sure, rain can sometimes put a damper on outdoor activities. But in the right context, the sight of rain can be indescribably beautiful. That’s certainly the case anytime it begins to rain at the Roman Pantheon — or should I say when it rains inside. In case you’re unaware, this breathtaking structure features a very unique feature. In the very middle of a massive dome, there’s a giant hole. And yes, it was put their intentionally.

In fact, this 27-foot wide hole (or oculus, as it’s called) serves a number of purposes. For starters, it was added to ensure that the overall dome was structurally sound. In other words, a hole lightened the weight. Then there’s the more obvious reason: It causes this already beautiful space to look even more stunning, including when it rains. “I think if they would just let me lie on the floor right there for a minute, it would be like a fully factory reset for my brain,” someone suggests in the comments, with another person pointing out, “Almost 2000 years of it. Imagine some ancient Roman cleric looked at the same thing you’re looking at right now.”

When it isn’t raining, light can be seen shining down on visitors. Considering it’s the only source of natural light to be found here, it tends to capture quite a bit of attention. And because of the location, it served as the perfect sundial. Wish you could see more of that rainstorm? The video below gives us a longer glimpse!

“A cool thing with the rain in the Pantheon is that the water just disappears into small holes that you can hardly see in the marble floor,” someone shares, another expressing how many of us feel, “More architecture should incorporate rain, no functional reason I just love rain.”
