Glancing across the snowy landscape, you see nothing but white, rolling hills as far as the eye can see. You might mistake the view for the West Siberian Plains or the Alaskan Wilderness. In an unprecedented weather event, snow has blanketed Saudi Arabia’s Al-Jawf desert region.

The unusual weather phenomenon resulted from a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea. The system brought moisture on a collision course with the desert heat. The reaction caused thunder, hail, and intense storms. After the initial onslaught of heavy storms, snow was dumped on the desert for the first time in recorded history.
The UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) warns that the desert snow may not be the end of their wacky weather. They advise residents that strong winds, thunderstorms, and hail may come over the next few days. They added an extra warning to remain on high alert for other unusual weather patterns.
The desert snow is currently trending on social media. People are posting videos and still images of the unique snow blanket. This exceptional weather event will be challenging as most residents have never seen snowfall. The snowy blanket is causing slick driving conditions for adventurous drivers.

This is the first time in history that the desert has been covered in snow, as temperatures there rarely drop to such levels. Climate Change? pic.twitter.com/PJVpeWYlEw
The desert snow is not all doom and gloom. The increased moisture in the area has rejuvenated rivers and waterfalls. Streams have begun flowing again, and the valleys are filling. Although too much water may cause flood conditions like those in the Sahara Desert earlier this year, residents hope it won’t get that bad.
Residents dressed warmly and gathered outside during the snowfall to offer prayers and rejoice at the renewal of local resources.
