The large white bird with amber eyes suddenly appeared on the rooftop of a Cypress home in late December 2022. Word soon spread amongst community members and a crowd began to gather, many people holding binoculars and taking photographs to capture this unusual sighting. Although several theories abound as to the origins of the visitor, she was universally welcomed by birdwatchers and passers-by. Even the homeowner himself was game for the unexpected company.
Snowy owls are usually spotted in the likes of Minnesota rather than the Golden State during their winter migration. In fact, the last known appearance of a snowy owl this close to California occurred over 100 years ago in Nevada, during the year 1918. Unfortunately, no visual proof of this incident exists.
There is, however, plenty of evidence to document the most recent California sighting. And the people of Orange County are extremely grateful to catch a glimpse of the magestic bird up-close. One onlooker summed up the experience perfectly: “It’s like a Christmas present from Mother Nature.” Indeed!
Take a look at the beautiful snowy owl in the video below, and remember to share this rare sighting with birdwatchers and animal lovers everywhere!
