Actor Steve Carell is probably most well-known for portraying Michael Scott in “The Office.” He held that role from 2005 until 2010. The full list of his credits is too long to go into here. Steve Carell has also voiced the character Gru in the “Despicable Me” series of movies. During an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, the actor recalled interacting with a young fan.

He began with some backstory about a friend with a son named Dylan. The friend asked Carell if he could leave a Happy Birthday message for their son from “Gru.” Obliging, the actor made the call, saying, “Hi Dylan, I hope you have a terrible birthday! Be a good kid and brush your teeth.”

The call was perfect, with the accent and gruffness of the Gru character dripping from every word. However, the next day, Carell received a call from Dylan’s Mom. The fallout from the call was hilarious. After hearing the message, young Dylan looked at his mom and said, “Mom, see? He’s real.” And that, for an actor, might be the greatest compliment ever!

Fallon’s next question was how Steve Carell developed the 12-year-old version of Gru’s voice during flashback scenes to the villain’s youth. The actor sarcastically admitted that the shift was “so, so difficult.” While Fallon was laughing uncontrollably, Carell did the voices, “I’ll go from this (in the normal, gruff Gru voice) to this (in the high-pitched pre-puberty Gru voice). The voice and accent of Gru have been topics of discussion in numerous interviews.

Can’t Get Enough Of Steve Carell And Gru?

If you haven’t seen the movies, they are great entertainment for children and adults. “Despicable Me” and “Despicable Me 2” are available on Peacock with a subscription. The next installment, “Despicable Me 3” is available on Amazon in DVD format or rented on Prime Video. “Despicable Me 4” is a new release in 2024 and is only available in the theaters.

As an adult (I only watch for the Minions), I was recently dragged kicking and screaming (I drove) to see DM4 in the theater. It is the best one yet! Popcorn and drinks cost us more than the matinee tickets, but it was an awesome way to spend the afternoon.

If you enjoy “Despicable Me” and Steve Carell as Gru, please share this hilarious birthday wish backfire.
