Strangers Jump Into Action And Save Baby’s Life When Mom Goes Into Labor At Restaurant

When Michigan resident Alyse Sparkman sat down to dinner with her husband, neither of them imagined their baby would be born in the restaurant before they even had a chance to enjoy their meal! Earlier that day, the couple had gone to the hospital because of the pregnant woman’s contractions. However, according to CBS Detroit, doctors told them that they were too early. They should go for a walk and perhaps get something to eat.

That’s how the pair ended up at Lily’s Seafood Grill & Brewery. Recalling the doctors’ advice, Sean Sparkman parked a couple of blocks away from the restaurant on the third level of a parking garage. He and his wife had been told that climbing stairs would be good for the pregnant woman.

Unfortunately, the couple had barely touched their food when Alyse’s water broke. In seconds, Sean was racing back to the parking garage to grab the car.

“I threw down some money, jumped over the fence and started running across town,” he told People.

There wasn’t enough time to get the car.

It seemed like Alyse’s baby was bound and determined to be born at that seafood restaurant! Thankfully, there happened to be a couple of nurses sitting at a table nearby. Patricia Worton and Kim Boustany both worked in the ICU. When they saw the pregnant woman going into labor, they knew they had to help.

It’s a good thing they stepped in. Alyse’s baby was struggling to survive with an umbilical cord strangling her!

“I dove towards the ground and as my hand touched her clothing, the baby’s head was against it,” Patricia recounted. “The baby was dark, dark blue and it wasn’t breathing, it wasn’t moving. The cord was so tight around the neck that the mom was trying to grab it.”

In the end, these two nurses were able to save the baby. Even fellow diners did their part to help out, offering clothing items to help the newborn stay warm. Her parents named her Penelope Lily, her middle name inspired by the restaurant where she was born. Alyse couldn’t be more grateful for the way the other patrons supported her through the harrowing experience, especially the two ICU nurses.
