It’s a hard and lonely life living on the streets, but a Texas couple turned their pup’s life around when they took her in as a stray.

When Hailee Graham and her husband brought Potate, aka Tate, to their home in Austin, Texas, her rough start at life was transformed into one filled with comfort and affection. But she’s a friendly sort, and while it was great to receive so much love and attention from her humans, something was missing.

She craved some doggie companionship, as well. Initially, she found it in Mr. Henry… but still, Tate longed for something deeper.

As fate would have it, the Grahams’ next door neighbor just happened to adopt Vernon right around the same time Tate joined their family. The Vizsla was almost the exact same age as Tate, too!

Tate and Vernon became fast friends, but there was just one problem: the tall, wooden fence that separated them. Not ones to let a manmade structure stunt their budding friendship, they were often found digging beneath the fence in a desperate attempt to get to each other.

Hailee thought they could solve the problem by setting up play dates, but they couldn’t get enough of one another.
Then, she had an “aha” moment: Let’s just build a doggie door! Tate closely supervised the project as Hailee’s husband went to work cutting out a Tate-and-Vernon-sized hole so they could come and go whenever the mood struck – no need to ask permission from their parents!

These two pups couldn’t be happier with their new, free-range existence!
“I hope that it encourages people to be more friendly with their neighbors, and encourage a sense of community,” Hailee said. “It has worked out well for us so far.”
