Did you know that, sometimes, animals have the ability to open locks? This is something the principal of Zela Elementary School had to learn the hard way. Before the start of a weekend, locks were placed on the dumpster outside. This was done after a number of garbage bags stored inside were spotted with tears.

Come Monday, principal James Marsh needed to open the dumpster. But as he did, a massive bear revealed himself. Needless to say, James ran as fast as he could in the other direction. As timing would have it, a fellow school employee began to walk outside at the same time. But as soon as she spotted the bear, she also went back inside, at least momentarily. See this harrowing ordeal unfold in the security footage below!

Elementary School Principal Starts His Morning with a Surprise Greeting from a Bear in the Dumpster
Luckily, both James and the curious bear found themselves on the same page — both were terrified of the other and simply wanted to get away without a confrontation. As for how the bear even got there… well, the lock wasn’t up to par. Footage showed that, over the weekend, the bear managed to get in and out of the dumpster multiple times.
After the lock was proven to be useless, however, the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources was quick to make modifications to it. Considering there hasn’t been any news of another bear break-in, it seems safe to assume this one worked.
As for James, he’s doing just fine. He was shaken up at first, of course, but at least he got a good story out of it!
“That will wake a person up,” James later said of the incident. “That was 7:15 a.m. If you are not already awake, that will wake you up.”
