Fortunately for Deputy Elliott of King County Sheriff’s Office in Washington, five young heroes were in the right place at the right time when an encounter with a suspect took a turn for the worse.
Following her shift on July 18, Elliott headed home in her patrol car at about 1 a.m. On her way there, she was flagged down at the scene of a crash involving multiple vehicles.
While she checked on everyone, one of the drivers told her the man who caused the crash was drunk and was trying to run off. Elliott hurried over to stop him, but he refused to listen and got violent. The two of them struggled, and he soon gained control and wrapped his hands around her neck.
That’s when Elliott heard several teenagers yelling and running toward her. Moments later, they freed her and held the suspect down so she could handcuff him. Once everything had calmed down, the grateful officer gave them a big hug.
For their bravery, Sheriff Mitzi Johanknect and Auburn Police Chief Daniel O’Neil presented each of the teens with a Medal of Heroism Award. Thanks to them, Elliott was able to walk away with nothing more than a few scrapes and bruises!
“We cannot thank these five young men enough for coming to Deputy Elliott’s rescue. They quite possibly saved her life,” the department wrote on Facebook. “Moms and Dads, you should be proud of these kids!”
We’re so glad these five teenagers were there at the right time and were courageous enough to intervene! It just goes to show that we’re never too young or old to step up for others in need.
