Due to a round of solar storms, the Northern Lights should be brightening skies just in time for the holiday. According to NOAA meteorologist Mike Bettwy via ABC News, auroras could be visible Thursday night into Friday morning.

If you will be in Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, or Wisconsin, you’ll likely be in the line of visibility. Northern parts of Idaho, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, and Wyoming may see the show, as well.

The Thanksgiving Northern Lights May Not Be The Last

The best time to see the Northern Lights this Thanksgiving will be between 10 PM ET Thursday night through 1 AM ET Friday Morning. However, meteorologists will know a better time frame for your area tomorrow. So be sure to check out the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center after dinner.

The auroras may be pale, so, as always, it’s best to travel outside of the city and away from any light pollution to get the best views. Your smartphone can also capture the colors better than your eyes. If the Northern Lights are faint, hold your camera to the sky and snap a few photos for a closer look.

According to Northern Lights Canada, the sun reached its peak—or solar maximum—in its 11-year cycle this year, which makes the Northern Lights more common throughout the rest of 2024 and part of 2025. So expect to see more auroras in the months ahead.
