Most of the time, makeup artists and hair stylists play vital roles on a TV set. Shooting an episode can take a long time, so it’s important that the actors have their makeup and hair touched up every once in a while. But The Office was an exception for an interesting reason.
The folks in charge of the show wanted to emphasize that the characters are normal people working normal jobs. So, rather than making sure they always looked “perfect,” they didn’t allow the actors to be “touched up” very often. At least not in the first few seasons of the show!

“They did an insanely good job of that and you really notice that difference when you get to season 7 and 8,” one fan points out in reply to Baumgartner’s reveal. “Everyone starts to look really manicured and well kept.”
Another fan adds, “I love that they wanted this how to feel as ‘real’ as possible. It’s the only comedy I can actually watch without getting bored, because it feels like you’re really there with them, in the world they’ve created.”
