The state of New York isn’t know for getting tornados, making the brief EF-1 spin up that happened on Monday quite surprising. In fact, this is the 26th tornado the state has seen this year, breaking their record. Thankfully, nobody got hurt, including the person who managed to capture incredible footage of the very moment the tornado formed.

While no doubt terrifying to witness at the time, as many people in the comments have pointed out, there’s something oddly beautiful about the moment the EF-1 forms. The debris delicately swirls around at first, eventually picking up momentum until it’s a full-fledged tornado. It goes a bit down the road but, luckily, it quickly vanishes. According to the National Weather Service Buffalo, the tornado seems to have peaked at 90 mph, making it no joke. It’s no wonder, then, that nearby buildings suffered damage. As a result, some residents have been displaced, and businesses are temporarily closed.

One person affected by this is Ken Colon, who owns Mighty Fine Fashions. His friend, Abdo Saleh, lives in the apartment above his business. Although they’re both upset by what happened, they’re also thankful that nobody was harmed.

“I’m happy nobody got hurt, especially my son’s babies,” Abdo shares. “And I’m of the philosophy — everything happens for a reason.”

Now, Ken, Abdo, and everyone else affected by this tornado are coming together to move forward. For Ken, that includes a fundraiser to get his store back up and running so he can have steady income again. In the meantime, he remains hopeful.

“I’m just saddened by what happened,” Ken says, “and I’m hopeful and optimistic that we’re gonna get through it, some way, somehow.”
