If this year’s Super Bowl logo stood out more than usual, there’s a reason why that’s the case. In order to “honor the cultural roots of New Orleans,” as Marissa Solis of the NFL says, they chose to commission a local artist. While there are tons of talented people in the area, ultimately, they went with Tahj Williams, a queen of the Golden Eagles Mardi Gras Indians.

Queen Tahj’s tribe has an incredibly rich culture. This culture began with the exchange of traditions between African slaves and local Native American groups in Louisiana. Now, these tribes continue to keep their African American, Creole, and Indigenous roots alive in a number of ways.
But if you had asked Tahj just a year or so ago, she never would have guessed that the NFL would provide her with an opportunity like this one.

“When people think about New Orleans, they think about the French Quarter — and all of that is definitely New Orleans,” Tahj explains. “But I think sometimes people forget that we have second line culture, the brass band culture, the Baby Doll culture, Skull and Bone gang, the Black Masking Indians, and I just wanted that to shine through.”
To create this year’s vibrant logo, Tahj used colorful beads. This included pinks, reds, and greens. And, as the video above shows, the result was absolutely beautiful! Luckily, this gorgeous logo can be seen in a number of places, including the digital game tickets, the official program cover, the Hyatt Regency New Orleans hotel, and right at the center of the football field, of course!
Tahj calls this opportunity “a huge honor,” noting that “this is definitely a moment that is going to live with me forever.”
