Instead of painting with a brush, Timu the rhino uses her lip to decorate her canvas. Footage shows how this process works. In the clip, a zookeeper held out a palette for the animal. Once the artist loaded her mouth up with paint, the human presented her with a canvas. Upon hearing the command, “Paint,” Timu deftly drew an abstract shape with her lip! Isn’t that impressive?

Another commenter wasn’t sure how they felt about this rhino being verbally commanded to paint by zookeepers. However, the zoo reassured this user that Timu doesn’t have to create art if she doesn’t want to.

“This is a voluntary activity for Timu that she enjoys,” they responded. “It allows her to interact with her caretakers and is a great form of enrichment! Her command to participate is ‘Paint,’ followed by a whistle. If she does not want to paint, she simply walks away. She is positively reinforced each time.”
