If you venture out into a forest, you’re bound to come across stunning creatures. Still, even experts with the Voyageurs Wolf Project are stumped over fascinating footage that a trail camera caught. This Minnesota-based project has folks working together in order to better understand the ecology of wolves. This means they’re interested in learning about where wolves live, what they eat, how they behave, etc.

In other words, it’s pretty wild that this mysterious creature was able to stump these experts. Part of what makes this animal so difficult to identify is the fact that they’ve only been spotted once, and on a trail camera. Check out this dog-wolf-like hybrid in the video below. What do you think?
Many folks on social media are confident that the creature is a hybrid between a wolf and a coyote. However, there are reasons that these experts find themselves less confident about this conclusion.
“To us, the animal looks ‘coyote-esque’ but has some dog-like aspects to its appearance (especially its ears), and possibly some wolf-like characteristics (e.g., robust snout, a bit bigger body than coyotes in our area…but these are attributes from some dogs as well),” they share, adding, “… In many respects, the animal looks more like eastern coyotes that live in eastern North America but still the ears just look real funny to us.”
This Dog-Wolf-Coyote Hybrid Has Experts Asking Us For Our Best, and Silliest, Theories
While the exact identity of this creature is likely to remain a mystery, folks working on this project welcome “outlandish speculation, conspiracy theories, and technically possible though highly-improbable explanations” from anyone who cares to share. Their own silly theory? A “woyote” — a hybrid of a dog, wolf, and coyote.
“Cat in a Halloween costume…” one person suggests, with another adding, “Those are giant mouse ears. It’s mouse-yote obviously.”
“All of the above,” a third person chimes in, “AND a little Ewok in the mix!”
