A doorbell camera outside a home in California caught some pretty unusual footage of a bear and two coyotes lingering by the front entrance. It’s hard to tell from the clip whether these animals were buddies or simply happened to be in the same place at the same time. However, there didn’t seem to be any animosity between them. UPI tells us that the incident was recorded outside the home of Los Angeles resident Ryan Meinardus in the Tujunga neighborhood.

In the clip, the bear walked up to the front door with one of the coyotes at their heels. Seemingly more timid, the third member of the trio remained further behind. Although the bear didn’t seem to mind the smaller creatures hanging around, the first coyote eventually chickened out and backed away. We’re not sure if they were afraid of the bigger animal, the human residence, or something else entirely.
ABC7 shared Ryan’s clip on social media, adding that seeing wildlife in neighborhoods around that area wasn’t all that uncommon. However, it was unusual for coyotes and bears to be so close to each other.
“Bears and coyotes are no strangers to Southern California’s foothill communities, but spotting them together is an uncommon sight,” the news outlet wrote in their caption.
This encounter isn’t quite as unusual as you’d think.
This isn’t the first time that bears and coyotes have been caught socializing in the wild. The Dodo reported a similar case in 2021. Apparently, a Florida trail camera managed to catch some footage of these two predators traveling through the woods together. Once again, the coyote was right behind the bear. In this case, though, neither creature got scared or ran off.
We’ve definitely seen stranger animal friendships out there!
