“What’s One Good Thing That Happened To You Today?” College Students Share

Two young women stand outside and in front of a mic placed on a stand. One woman smiles, teeth showing. The other smiles as she talks

Life can get pretty overwhelming. When that happens, it can be all the more difficult to spot the joys in life, even when there are still a lot of them. While it’s important to avoid toxic positivity (ignoring “negativity” for the sake of not wanting to feel bad), it’s just as important to not fall into total despair, either. One way to find a healthy balance is through practicing gratitude.

One way to do this is by journaling a list of things you’re grateful for once a week or even daily. While this may sound daunting or cheesy, you might be surprised by what you come up with. Need some examples? Check out what students at UNC-Chapel Hill had to say when prompted, “Tell us one good thing that happened today.”

How inspiring is it to see so many smiling, grateful faces!? The cherry on top, however, has to be the common thread in all of their answers. While some of them shared rather big news (like getting an internship), most shared what we’d consider to be “small” things in life. It’s the perfect reminder that it’s the little things in life that matter most.

College Students Inspire Gratitude When Prompted to Share “One Good Thing” That Happened to Them That Day

“Everyone saying ‘I woke up’ like what a gift it is just to wake up every morning! I love that!” someone shares in reply to this wholesome video, with another person adding, “Lesson: You don’t need to have a fancy things to make your day.”

“Whoever thought of setting up a microphone is a brilliant human being,” a third person points out. “And the people who shared their moments are just as special.”
