Business signs are typically used to inform potential guests of the latest deals and specials they’re offering… but that is certainly not always the case. Some use their signs as a way to be humorous. The sign war between Ioanni’s Grill and Dank Burrito in Morehead, North Carolina is the perfect example. That’s right, a sign war. It all started when the folks at Dank Burrito noticed their neighboring restaurant had kept the same message on their sign for nearly a month.

To make the situation even funnier, the sign read, “Happy birthday Jeff.” Feeling a bit mischievous, the folks at Dank Burrito chose to put up a new sign of their own, addressing the one at Ioanni’s Grill. It read, “Ioanni’s quit being lazy, change your sign.” This led to more funny responses, as seen below.
Maybe the owner of Dank Burrito, Clarke Merrell, expected some sort of response, but he certainly didn’t expect this to turn into an all-out sign war. But that’s exactly what has happened! In addition to responses from Ioanni’s Grill, other nearby businesses are getting in on the harmless fun.
“I’ve seen a ton of people stop and take pictures of the signs,” Clarke shares. “I think there’s over 70 businesses that have chimed in since.”
Word of North Carolina’s 2024 Sign War in Morehead Hilariously Spreads Across the Country
In fact, there’s a whole Facebook group dedicated to this unexpected “war.” Fittingly, it’s called 2024 Sign Wars Carteret County NC. As of the moment this article is being written, there are over 11,800 members from all across the country.
This silly sign war is a good laugh, of course, but it’s even led to opportunities for good. Ashley Harrell, an owner of Gaffer’s Restaurant in Emerald Idle, is using the popularity of this rivalry to raise money so local school lunch debt can be wiped clean. So far, $21,000 dollars have been raised.
How much longer will this sign war continue? Only time will tell. Here’s what we do know: It seems that neither side will give up without a hilarious fight.
“I’m going to keep it up as long as I can,” Sam Turnage, owner of Ioanni’s Grill says.
