You never know when lifesaving advice will come in handy. Luckily, Josie Bowers was able to recall wise words from her stepdad when she was only 15 years old. The harrowing moment took place during what should have been a happy time: a vacation. In fact, this was quite a trip for Josie’s family. They’re from Canada and were staying in the States at Ocean City Hilton in Maryland.

During the trip, her family visited a nearby beach. At some point, the 15-year-old needed to go back to the hotel for a shower, and she did so alone. Just as she was getting out, however, she noticed a long wire hook being slid under the door. Someone was trying to open the door with it. Panicked, the teen managed to slam the door on the strangers just in time. Hear what happened next in the video below (Content Warning: Language).

At first, Josie wondered if the strangers were telling the truth. What if she had shut the door on Hilton workers? Despite the stress of this moment, Josie was able to reason why that didn’t make sense. Best of all, though, she remembered what her stepdad taught her: Never let people know you’re alone.
